The organs which are involved in the production of speech sounds are called organs of speech. The air that we breathe out comes out of the lungs. Before it reaches the outer atmosphere, various organs of our body convert it into speech sounds. These organs are called organs of speech.The organs involved in the production of speech can be divided into three groups:
1. The respiratory system- lungs, muscles, trachea.
2.The phonetary system- larynx, vocal cords.
3. The articulatory system- nose, mouth, tongue, teeth, lips.
Lungs:
It is a bladder-like structure which is made up of alveolic. The air we breath passes through the throat into the lungs through a tube called trachea. The muscles of the lungs expand and contract due to ingression or egression of air. The aggressive air stream produces all the speech sounds and the ingressive air stream produces non-linguistics sounds.
Larynx:

It is the main organ referred to as sound box. In the larynx, there are vocal cords. Normally, vocal cords are held wide apart and the air passes freely. When the vocal cords are held together, the air can not pass freely and there is a vibration, then voiced sounds are produced.

When the vocal cords open for the air, this opening is called glottis. Different kinds of sounds are produced due to different states of glottis. The four different states of glottis are as follows:
1. Voiced.
2. Voiceless.
3. Murmur.
4. Creaky voice.
Difference between Voiced and Voiceless:
The difference between voiced and voiceless sounds lies in the vibration of vocal cords. The difference of voiced and voiceless is : In producing speech sounds, when our vocal cords vibrates, it is called voiced sounds. Further, in producing speech sound, when our vocal cords don't vibrate, it is known as voiceless sound.
Pharynx:

This includes active and passive articulators. One opening goes to mouth which is called oral cavity and the other opening goes to nose is called nasal cavity. Diagram:

Oral cavity:
Oral sounds are produced by raising the soft palate and completely closing the nasal cavity. Three organs of oral cavity are:
1. Upper jaw- upper teeth, lip, palate.
2. lower jaw- lower teeth, lip, tongue.
3. Palate- separate mouth from the nose.
Tongue:
It is the main body inside the mouth widely used for the production of speech sounds. Tongue is divided into five parts:

It is a blank structure in the form of a cavity. There are two openings at the end of the cavity.

In the classification of phonetics, we find articulatory phonetics which deals with the Organs of speech. It also describes the use of organs of speech in producing speech sounds. To exemplify, /p/ sound is produced from lungs without any odd in vocal cords and is produced by aggressive air. And its place of articulation is upper lip and lower lip.

The definition of the organs of speech can be given shortly " The organs involves in producing speech sounds."
In broad sense, " The organs of our body which participates in the production of speech sounds are known as organs of speech." Normally we breathe air and the air comes from the lungs. Before reaching the air in outer atmosphere, several organs of our body turns into speech sounds. The organs which are involved in it are called organs of speech.
Classification of Organs of Speech:
To define the classification of organs of speech, there are three major classes of the organs of speech. 1. Lungs. 2. Larynx. 3. Pharynx.
Further, in these classification of the organs of speech, there are some sub-classes. A grouped view of these organs can be divided into three parts:
1. Respiratory System: which includes lungs, muscles, bronchial tube / trachea.
2. Articulatory System: which includes nose, mouth, tongue, teeth, lips.
3. Phonetary System: which includes larynx, vocal cords.

- Ingressive air stream produces non-linguistic sounds.

- Vocal cords are combined – air can’t pass freely, there is vibration.
- Vibration in cords – voiced sounds are produced.
- No vibration in cords – voiceless sounds are produced.
- Opened vocal cord is called Glottis.
- In different states of glottis – several sounds are produce.

Ø A tube-like structure with two ends.
Ø One ends goes to the mouth – Oral cavity.
Ø Other end goes to the nose – Nasal cavity.
Ø Opening / Closing of pharynx managed by – Velum / Soft palate.
