The old English period began from 450 CE when the
mighty tribes of Germany came to England and defeated the local people. They
were the Angles, Saxons and the Jutes. They reigned in England
for more than six hundred years. They had much impact on the local people which
led the creation of English language. English language is a West
Germanic language emerged from the Anglo-Frisian dialects. The word ‘England’
emerged from ‘Anglalond’. ‘Anglalond’ turned into ‘Englelond’ and
further ‘England’. Before the arrival of Angles and Saxons, England was
ruled by the Romans. Furthermore, in 1066, the French tribes Normans came to
England. They defeated the Saxons and then the Anglo-Norman period began.
In the Old English Period/Anglo Saxon period,
Christian religion was being spread over England. Paganism was turning to
Christianism. In this period, King Alfred the Great supervised the compilation
of the Anglo Saxon Chronicle which was the first historical record of
the place.

Anonymous writing:
Most of the writers of this period
were unknown. For example, Beowulf, The Wanderer, The Seafarer, The Husband’s
Message, The Wife’s Lament, Traveler are the literary works of this period. The
writers of these literary texts were unknown.
Religion:
Christianity was being spread over England
in this period. But the literary field was still dominated by pagan thoughts.
Writing phenomena:
The most prominent phenomena of
writing of this age was heroic deeds of the heroes as well as sea
adventures. Further theme of glory and savagery were dominant
phenomena of writing of this period.
Old English Periods Writers:
The Anglo Saxon period’s writers were Caedmon, Cynewulf, St.
Venerable Bede, King Alfred the Great.
King Alfred the Great:
He
is called ‘The Law Governing’. He was the king of England from 871 to 899 till
his death. He is prominent for his compilation of ‘The Anglo Saxon Chronicle’.
The Anglo Saxon Chronicle is a collection of seven manuscripts of the
history of the Anglo-Saxons or the history of England.
Caedmon:
Caedmon is called
the father of old English poetry. He is also called ‘The Father of
English Sacred Song’. His best work is ‘Paraphrase’.
Cynewulf:
His best known
poem is ‘Juliana’.
Venerable Bede:
He is
called ‘the First Historian in English Language’.
The Old English Period: Literary works:
‘Beowulf’ is considered the
first epic poem in English. Then ‘The Wanderer’, The Seafarer,
The Husband’s Message, The Wife’s Lament, Traveler were
the known literary works of this period. But unfortunately, the writers of this
writings are still unknown.
