Terry Eagleton is one of the greatest critics of modern times. His eloquent critical style surpasses all the critics of this age. To define ‘style’, it is the author’s way of expressing things. Style includes idea arrangement, choice of words, patterns of the sentences, use of rhetorical devices, coherence of sentences and tone. Terry Eagleton has used these style with strong writing hands in his writing “The Rise of English”. He has written his essays with greater clarity and cogency that no one explains their critical theories as he has done. In his essay “The Rise of English”, he has tried to reach deep into the origins and aims of English studies. It holds a strong appeal of his critical style.

 

Prose style of Eagleton:

Firstly, the dialectical style is the stunning feature of Eagleton’s prose style. It means Eagleton tries to find the truth behind his given opinion. Secondly, another feature of the prose style of Eagleton is its grasp of social and cultural contradictions with shrewd mastery. Here, he has specialized the critical theories of last hundred years and speaks as a historian. He broadly discusses how English studies was changed and took place of religion and enforced social bonding.

 

Insight behind humours: Eagleton’s prose style:

Humour is an ordinary feature of Eagleton’s prose style. But, these humours underlie deep insights. For instance, in “The Rise of English”, Terry Eagleton has used numbers of humourous comments. In this critical work, he compares Earnest Dowson’s work with a bus ticket. He also compares scrutiny with Nazism of Adolf Hitlar. His comparison of Barthes’ writing with pornography is another example of this feature. Though this comparisons are absurd, but they contain insight and truth.
