Victorian Period: Historical Events:
Industrial Revolution:
Industrial revolution sparked during
Victorian era. Most of the people used to live in the villages doing farming
and weaving. During the revolution, new machines took away people’s jobs and a
significant number of people shifted to towns. In the mid-nineteenth century,
the population living in towns grew more than fifty percent. Steam engines and
use of steel changed the economy of England rapidly.
Reformation Bill:
The reformation bill was brought to enhance
the voting rights of male property owners and working-class people in 1832 and
1867 consecutively.
Origin of Species:
In 1859, Charles Darwin Published his book
‘On the Origin of Species’ from observation of finches in Galapagos Islands
covering 1831 to 1836. It has an enormous impact in Victorian society
introducing a wall between religion and science.
Crimean War 1854-56:
Russian influence over the regions of ottoman empire /Uthmani caliphate (middle
east/holy land and Mediterranean east) caused the Crimean war. Russia was
challenged by France to establish power in the churches under Ottoman Empire. Ultimately Britain and Sardinia (Present
Italy) joined France and Ottoman Empire /Uthmani Caliphate declared
war Against Russia. Russia lost the war, but 21000 British troops
died. Florence Nightingale became prominent during this war by caring British
wounded soldiers with her 38 nurses.
Literary Features of Victorian Period:
The Victorian period built bridge between the romantic notions from eighteenth century and realistic thoughts of twentieth century. Novel became the dominant literary genre at the time having broadened readers. Novels of the period represented middle class of the society and contemporary life of common men. They intended to preach the message of moral fall and provided optimism and hope.
Every literary period has some features; the Victorian period is not different from them. The features of Victorian period are given below –

Victorian Period: Summary:
The Victorian
period is one of the most remarkable periods in English literature. The
duration of this period is from 1832 to 1901. This period is named after Queen
Victoria who reigned over England from 1837. The Victorian period began in 1832
because the literary features of the new age became obvious during 1832. The
Victorian Period has a great contribution in the history of English literature.
The Victorian Age is called the age of Tennyson. This period is rightly divided
into 2 sub-periods.
1) The Pre- Raphaelites period:
The twelve years from 1848 to 1860 is called the age of the
Pre-Raphaelites because in this period, the artistic follow the art forms used
before the period of Raphael.
2) The Aesthetic Period:
The last two decades
from 1880 to 1901 of this periods are called the age of Aestheticism. These
decades also called ‘the Decadence’ because there was a decay of the Victorian
spirit and standard in these years.

Matthew Arnold (1822-1888):
Matthew Arnold is an extraordinary poet of Victorian period.
Matthew Arnold was an elected professor of Poetry at Oxford in 1857. Matthew
Arnold wrote some famous poems like Dover Beach, Thyrsis, The Scholar Gipsy
etc.
Alfred Tennyson (1832-1901):
Alfred Tennyson is another extraordinary poet of the
Victorian Period. Tennyson is regarded as the representative poet of the
Victorian period. Alfred Tennyson is the beginner of dramatic monologue. In his
lifetime he wrote many world-famous poems like Ulysses, Tithonus, Crossing the
Bar, The Lotos Eaters etc.
Robert Browning (1812-1883):
Robert Browning is a famous poet of Victorian period. He is called
the master of dramatic monologue. He is a poet of spirituality. His
world-famous poems are My Last Duchess, Andrea Del Sarto, Fra Lippo Lippi etc.
George Eliot (1819-1880):
George Eliot’s full name is Mary Ann Evans. She was an English poet, novelist of the Victorian period. George Eliot's seven most famous novels are: The Mill on the Floss, Scenes of Clerical Life, Adam Bede, Silas Marner, Romola, Middlemarch.
